Birthday

Thank you, everyone for the wonderful and heartfelt birthday wishes. This was the bestest birthday I've had in a long time. I guess it helps to be happy and healthy.

For my birthday I slept in and did much of nothing for a major portion of the day... all in preparation for the evenings events. It was kinda funny that tonight I get calls from my brothers asking if I was drunk yet... or if I had any wild escapades planned.

I guess I've become mellow in my advanced years, but I was neither incapacitated, nor had wild plans... I left this afternoon to have dinner with Linda and the kids. Linda made me one of my favorite dishes that I'd created. It's based on a Portuguese stew called Mood Beef. I love it, as it's warm and filling, and tasty as all get out (and relatively easy). She did a wonderful job and it was as good as if I had made it myself.

Linda gave me my presents - more awesomeness!!!

After the birthday dinner, complete with cake Linda made, we went to the Columbus Zoo to see the Wild Lights display. 3 million Christmas lights all around the park, with music and fun displays. There were also some animal exhibits still open. Some of the enclosures obviously couldn't be open as it's cold, and dark. We had a great time, and plan to head back to the zoo sometime during the spring. (Sorry, there are no pictures at the moment as I realized as I was half-way to Linda's that I forgot my camera. I have some from my phone, but of poor quality.)

All in all, this was the best birthday, and to spend it with those I love most... my kids and Linda, made it so.

From informative articles being published in The Clan Graham News to commemorative plates being sold to support restoration efforts of the Mugdock Castle, several special events are being planned as a tribute to our clan ancestor, the Great Marquis!

Cool stuff!!

Ugh... Merry Christmas to me... Just spent $400 on a part for the Jeep... Had to buy the entire "module" even though the actual part that I need costs less. It's only sold OEM and there's none in the junk yards. If it didn't rain so much in Ohio, I'd be fine!

I made this...

I don't have a lot of $$, so to make what I do have stretch a bit, I like to do crafty things... or artsy... for gifting. I dunno if I'm really any good at it, but here's an example of a vase I've made.

I simply used an empty wine bottle, soaked it in hot water to remove the labels (after drinking the wine, of course), and painted acryllic flowers on it. The topper is a glass crystal dipped in watered down "pink" acryllic paint. It's attached to a metal stopper, so it will appear that there is always a flower in the vase, even if empty.

Here's the result... what do ya think (I'm off to bed while you all critique it):

I had four Christmas cards waiting for me when I got home this evening. One was mailed to me from a friend... and the others... the most surprising... were from other tenants in my complex. It's the first time I've gotten any from two of them... I found it quite touching.

Just got home from a busy night. It ended with some good friends, one of which I hadn't seen in years. It couldn't have been a better night.

Going to The River Club at Confluence Park http://www.riverclubrestaurant.com/riverclub/ tonight for Linda's work Holiday party. Dinner at Trattoria-roma first. http://www.trattoria-roma.com/ Afterwards we'll stop over at a friend's house to hang out for a while... It'll be a great night!

This Little Light

Saturday, Linda, the kids and I went on a tour of 8 historic churches in downtown Lancaster. In one lil church was a bluegrass gospel group called Prospect Hill. They were quite entertaining (for bluegrass... :D).

This isn't them, but it works for the shot.

As for the shot, I was playing around, trying to catch some elements of the church... and taking pics of the lit candles. It turned out ok, I think.

Ok, i'm going to bed. I posted a pic and a song... and it went to some yahoo search thingy saying it couldn't find the page I was looking for. Now the post I worked on is gone. Grrrrrrr...

I think tomorrow's gonna be a bit busy... I am having my mattress and box-spring delivered (between 12 and 6 - bullshit, I tell ya), am supposed to go pick up some homemade hard candies from a friend down south... 6 pm is when the candlelight tour begins (8 churches in downtown Lancaster, the streets lit with candles). Somewhere in there I am taking the kids and Linda to dinner... I think I may have overbooked.

I think Kimmie gave me her crud.

It's 3am... And it's cold outside. Why aren't I sleeping? I dunno.

Linda and I saw The Muppet Movie this afternoon... It was total awesomeness!! I will definitely see it again, and own it, and... well, I seriously hope they bring the Muppet Show back! Good, clean, fun entertainment!

Food show was awesome!! I found some knives that I soooo want. And there's a spirit (liquor) by Kettle One, chipotle vodka under the brand name of Harbor One. Mmmm, bought the bloody Mary mix that goes with it.

Off to bed... I'm going to a food show tomorrow, and have to be up north to meet my friend at 9 am. Woo hoo!!

I got my blood test results back... it's a boy. No, really... My A1C is 6.4 (normal is 6.3). Cholesterol is 187 (below 200 is good) although the mix between good and bad (HDL and LDL respectively) are outta whack. My mean glucose level is 132 (was 150+ three months ago). Only two real issues here... one being the low "good cholesterol... I have to increase my exercising. Ugh. Two is the high TSH levels... she's increasing the dosage on my thyroid meds. I'd say overall, the results are good. :D

Tonight was Syd's final band/flag twirling concert and banquet.I've got some pics, but I'm a bit tired. I didn'tget a lot of sleep last night, and running full-speed busy at work to leave in time to get Syd to the banquet has left me... worn out.

Just found out Carl Qadaffi is dead too. The things we find out at work.

I placed the order for the shots today. 7- 8x10's... I hope they like how they turn out in print. I'm going to charge for the cost of prints and about $75 for time. Basically $50 an hour for the shoot and post processing. Does that sound fair?

What we've decided to do is to use this first shot as the 8 x 10, with inset shots below the car (within the 8x10). There're going to be three shots beneath it, which are of the interior, the engine, and a shot from the rear of the car.

Just got home from taking pics... I think they rock! The guy liked them, and we sat and discussed how he'd like them presented. I'll work on that this week. It's quite exciting. :D

I've been asked to do a photo shoot of some classic cars for a car show up in Canton. Paid, even. I'm excited, and a bit nervous. I ain't got a big boy camera, or anything, but the woman has seen pics I've taken and likes them. I'm gonna do it tomorrow after work. Cross fingers that they come out alright... the guy is kinda picky. He's gotten two others to do it, and hasn't liked either one.

Yup, I'm going. I'm getting my geek on, with my geek children. The day after I walk to stop the diabetes, I'm taking the three monsters to the Greater Columbus Convention Center to walk in the world only geeks know exist. I will walk in the footsteps of costumed goobers, for whom this will be their only foray into the world of light and other living people.

I'm going to have fun... watching those people... and taking pics of them to share with all you good people. :D Of course, I'm a superhero fan, so there will be some geeky-coolness going on... Adam West and Burt Ward will be there (original Batman and Robin for those who don't know...) Billy Dee Williams (Lando in Star Wars)... along with artists of some of my favorite comics heros.

I'm going with my best friend, too, so I know we'll have a blast, regardless of whatever is going on around us, but mostly because of what is going on around us. We watch people... and make fun of them. As we expect others are of us.

I could go as a Wookie, but... It's going to be cold, and to take my shirt off would just be silly. :D

I started watching Pan-Am... The opening scene was of a boy holding his mother's hand, staring out the window at a Jumbo Jet. It was 1963... it was new. It was fascinating. A pilot walks by and the awe on the boy's face... made me feel at a loss.

I felt the loss of anything being new again, like it was when all you wanted was the Lil Red Wagon... or a model of the Mercury rocket 'cause you saw it on TV. Or TV for that matter. I felt the loss of not taking these things for granted. They weren't always there, and now they seem to be the norm of everyday.

We've advance so far, so fast that new is the norm now. If something "new" isn't released every few months or so... we've become stagnant. Even in the reality that nothing really is "new" anymore... just redesigned. Minor tweaks, or new widgets.

I want new. I want someone to look up to... someone about whom I can say, "Wow! I wanna be him/her when I grow up!" Do kids really feel that anymore these days? Or am I just too old, and jaded? Oh, don't get me wrong... I get excited when there's "new" stuff released, just like any kid would, but it's not the same as... "I'm going to the moon one day!" excited.

I guess when I saw that... and saw the look in that boy's eye... I just wanted for this one moment to be that kid again, and believe that "Yes, I too can fly to the ends of the world and beyond."

Casey got a personal best again today. This was the Lancaster Invitational, and for the 5k (3 miles) he got a time of 22:07. This was a difficult and hilly course, I'm so excited for him! (And proud OF him!)

Thursday night we attended the Foo Fighters concert. Amazing! Friday was the company event at Deer Creek State Park. Fun. I fell asleep early after picking up the kids. I just awoke, and have NO voice at all. Nothing. Gone. It'll be an interesting weekend with the boys.

A night to celebrate

Last night was a night to celebrate the seniors participating in school sports programs, as well as the band. Parents were invited to participate and escorted their child on to the field, arm in arm.

Syd is lucky... there were a few kids there with only one parent, either absent, or passed... She has three to support and love her. As much of a pain as I know she can be... I am thankful to her stepfather for being there throughout her life when I couldn't.

Not that I've really been around much, but I'm prolly definitely not going to be available much this coming weekend... lots going on. Heading up to Lake Erie on Sunday, spending the night... Jars for the first batch of hot, zesty pickles are in the boiling waterbath for 15 minutes. The mixture for the next batch is boiling in the next pan. Now to wait 4-6 weeks to see if they taste any good. I hope so, I've never done this before.

I need some writing prompts. Give me something good to get me started on something grand...

Anyone who knows Lisa (emotionalblondesa), particularly those who take part regularly in Picture Perfect, will know about her husband Tommy's battle against cancer. The Picture Prefect team are organising a major support event to help them through these difficult times. Sorry everyone... I've closed the previous post as it's caused some sort of... I dunno... pain in the ass and hurtful words to be exchanged. I sometimes feel like an outside spectator, even in my own life...

Lettering and Jackets

I have a bit of a beef with the school my kids attend. Maybe I'm off the mark, and it's every school around the nation that does this... if this is the case, it should change.

My son Logan has had an uphill challenge all his life. He suffers (or not) from Aspberger's Syndrome, a form of autism. It's been a challenge for him to fit in and be a part of anything in both school's he's attended, even in the private Catholic school. Every year we had to fight the school to provide him what he needed to succeed, and every year they tried to convince us that he'd be better off going to a "special school". We disagreed.

We were proven to be right. We fought, we pushed... we KNEW he could do this, and do it better than anyone. He may not be a popular kid in school, but he is his own person, doing his own thing. He was in a play this year, and did very well. This year he is taking journalism, hoping to write for the school paper. He's found a definite interest, and with his odd...er... unique perspective, he could quite possibly excel at this too.

In all this, he has excelled academically. He has a grade point average of 3.5 and has received a "letter" in academics along with and ASTRA badge (something about academic excellence.) I am so very proud of him. One problem with this though... apparently at the high school he attends, they don't allow letterman jackets for academics. I find this VERY WRONG!

My daughter, as wonderful, and beautiful as she is, can twirl a flag and get a jacket for a sport (not to take anything away from the effort she puts into that), but someone who puts just as much effort, if not more, into maintaining a high GPA gets shunned. Is this any less of an achievement? Obviously this places more importance on the sports program than academics. Why again is this country so freaking DUMB?

I love my kids and all they've accomplished equally. I would simply love to see that their achievements in their respective activities were seen in the same light by the school, or community in which they are excelling. I know this can't be the norm everywhere... Please tell me it's just the "small town, high school football is king" mentality.

Otherwise, it's time we all just give up on our kids now...

Just met with the trainer dude. Butt is officially kicked today. 10 minutes on this thing that looked like an eliptical trainer, but wasn't. Then 23 on the treadmill. Ouch, mutha.... This is my choice, right? Healthy is good.

I was excited, but wanted to see how this fared for the rest of the day. Before lunch it was only 107... by dinner time it was 127... Waking up this morning it was 120... Woo hoo! With diet, exercise, and this wonderful new medication... I can certainly control this! As for the exercise, I joined a gym. I go to see the personal trainer on Monday for an exercise program... I'm excited. I did go on Wednesday to see how it would be, and... I exercised my butt off (which is the point, right?). I don't know how I can tell if the thyroid stuff is working or not... other than I don't feel tired right now... but I really did last night. At that point though it was already the end of the day... kinda hard to tell if I was truly tired, or it was my thyroid... we'll see. :D
